Geared toward beginner and novice triathletes, the clinics on August 11th are designed to help you prepare for the Luray Triathlons as well as other short course triathlons with open water swims.

The full clinic includes course discussion; a lifeguard supervised open water practice swim in pristine Lake Arrowhead; and a chance to ride and run the scenic bike and run courses. There is also an option for the swim only portion of the clinic.

Presented by top coaches, athletes and  experts, the clinics will provide you with knowledge and expertise to put you on the fast track towards accomplishing your triathlon goals.

• Full clinic: 8 AM to 1 PM
• Swim only clinic: 8 AM to 10:30 AM

About the Clinics

For the open water swim portion, our expert coaches will be there to talk briefly about open water swimming and give tips for success, but most of all the practice is an opportunity for YOU as the athlete to get in open water in a safe, lifeguarded, stress free, non-competitive environment that will bolster your confidence come race morning. Course will be marked with buoys and you are welcome to swim multiple laps of the course within the allotted time frame. Please note that this is not an individual stroke clinic.

For the bike and run portions of the full clinic, coaches will discuss biking and running then give you the opportunity to practice on the Luray Triathlon course in a non-competitive environment. Finally, the full clinic wraps up with a discussion and examples of transition area. Lunch is included with the full clinic.

Every generation of Patty Sevre’s family has been engraving glass since the 1740′s. She creates these beautiful works of art using the time honored methods of revolving stones, copper wheels, and cooling water handed down through the generations. Every aspect of her work is freehand and shows the quality her keen eyes, sure hands, and 50 years of experience bring to a very old skill.

In her own words:

Over the last 50 years, I have  cut special orders for Tiffany & Co., Shreve Crump & Low, Boston, Ma. And  many Gift stores all over these United States and did consultant work teaching the fine art of glass cutting and designed the lathe for turning the wheels. Now I hand carve people’s portraits in glass, awards, corporate gifts, logos and any kind of art work  because crystal is my canvas. I enjoy it not because of  just the art but for the history of it, and about my family.

About Best of the U.S.

The Best of the US Amateur Triathlete Competition is a single-elimination, nationwide tournament qualifying the top three male and female amateur triathletes from each state to race each other head-to-head, regardless of age, at the National Championship. Although most competitors are 25 – 40, Championship racers have ranged in age from 15 to 51.

Each state has only one designated Qualifier Race. Athletes must be amateurs and a resident of the state to be eligible. Best of the U.S. medalists are the Top Three male and female resident amateurs at the current year’s Qualifier Race for their home state. All six state team members have the opportunity to race for individual awards, and for their state, in the Fastest State Team Competition. New in 2010 was Team awards for the Fastest Male and Fastest Female Teams, in addition to the overal coed Fastest Team awards.

The Best of the U.S. Championship affords the nation’s best amateurs their only opportunity to race in an elite, non-age-graded exhibition-style open-course environment. The competition is fierce, and brings out each athlete’s “best game”. Every year athletes finish the race saying “I never knew I could do that!” And that’s why Best of the U.S. exists–for high-performing amateurs to be inspired to their best, yes. But also to inspire the rest of us: to keep training, keep racing and always do our best.

Jef Mallett is the author and illustrator of the award-winning and nationally syndicated comic strip Frazz, which runs in over 160 newspapers in the U.S. and Canada and at comics.com/frazz.

Jef has published three collections of Frazz illustrations, Frazz 3.14159…, Frazz, Live at Bryson Elementary, and 99 Percent Perspiration and most recently his new book, Trizophrenia: Inside the Minds of a Triathlete, which is receiving high praise from athletes and non-athletes alike.  Jef writes a regular column for Inside Triathlon magazine and is a contributing artist for VeloNews magazine.

Jef has been racing triathlons on and off since the early '80s, alternating between triathlon and bike racing. He finished his second Ironman this past fall.  Jef was recently interviewed by Slowtwitch.com and had some interesting things to say about the sport and its intersection with his work.  He will be competing in the "Luray Double" this year.
