History of the Triathlons

Beginning with 460 athletes registered the first year with both races held on Sunday, the 2009 triathlon saw more than 1,200 athletes register – a growth of 250%!

The Luray Triathlon was founded in 2006 by triathlete and coach David Glover after an extensive search for a new race venue that was both scenic and challenging while being convenient to the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

After visiting Luray, David made a fortuitous phone call to Luray Parks and Recreation Director D. Patrick O’Brien who excitedly agreed to to host this new event at beautiful Lake Arrowhead.  Ever since the inaugural race, the Luray and Page County communities have embraced the Luray Triathlon, making it the best community supported and most welcoming triathlon in the mid-Atlantic region.
